Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive social issue that undermines the social and economic empowerment of individuals, particularly women. In Chanchaga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, GBV manifests in various forms, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and trafficking, with women and girls being the most affected. Such violence has far-reaching consequences not only on the physical and psychological well-being of victims but also on their ability to engage in economic activities and contribute meaningfully to community development (Adeleke & Usman, 2024).

The relationship between GBV and economic empowerment is complex, as violence often prevents women from accessing economic resources, pursuing education, or securing employment. Women who experience violence may face challenges such as trauma, social stigma, and limited mobility, all of which impede their ability to fully participate in economic life. In Chanchaga, the rate of GBV has been high, and its impact on women’s economic participation is a key concern for local development (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to explore the effects of GBV on economic empowerment in Chanchaga, focusing on how it affects women’s access to income, employment, and overall economic independence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Gender-based violence in Chanchaga LGA has significant consequences for women's economic empowerment. Victims of GBV often experience difficulties in accessing education, employment, and financial independence due to the physical, psychological, and social barriers imposed by violence. Despite efforts by government and non-governmental organizations to address GBV, the persistent nature of these abuses continues to hinder women’s ability to thrive economically. This study aims to assess the extent to which GBV affects women’s economic empowerment in Chanchaga and propose interventions that could help mitigate these challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of gender-based violence on women’s economic empowerment in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

  2. To identify the socio-economic challenges faced by women who are victims of gender-based violence.

  3. To recommend policy measures and interventions to support women’s economic empowerment in Chanchaga.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does gender-based violence affect women’s economic empowerment in Chanchaga Local Government Area?

  2. What are the socio-economic challenges faced by victims of gender-based violence in Chanchaga?

  3. What interventions can be implemented to promote economic empowerment for women affected by GBV in Chanchaga?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Gender-based violence significantly limits the economic empowerment of women in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

  2. Victims of gender-based violence in Chanchaga face severe socio-economic challenges that prevent them from achieving economic independence.

  3. Implementing supportive interventions, such as economic empowerment programs and legal reforms, will enhance the economic well-being of women affected by GBV.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the critical issue of gender-based violence and its impact on women's economic empowerment in Chanchaga. By providing evidence of how GBV restricts economic opportunities for women, the findings will contribute to developing effective policies aimed at reducing violence and promoting gender equality. Furthermore, this research will inform the design of empowerment programs and community-based interventions that can help women rebuild their lives and participate fully in the economy.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of gender-based violence on women's economic empowerment in Chanchaga Local Government Area, Niger State. It does not cover other forms of violence or geographic regions outside Chanchaga. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining data from victims who may be unwilling to disclose their experiences due to stigma or fear of retribution.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Any form of violence directed at an individual based on their gender, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

  • Economic Empowerment: The ability to access resources, opportunities, and decisions that enhance one's ability to achieve economic independence and participate fully in economic life.

  • Victims of GBV: Individuals, primarily women and girls, who suffer from physical, sexual, or emotional abuse due to their gender.
